Study cards… or FUN cards?

theshadowjjang:

Dongmin thought about it and he wondered if there was some kind of a trick to this, or they just weren’t very good at this. “I feel as though the trick here is that they must be using glue or tape.” It was the only explanation that he could think of. If simply exhaling was enough to knock down the small triangle he made, how was it that card castles could stand to the test on a movie set or for a homemade video?

Moving closer on his end as well, he carefully held the cards in question and waited for him to put on the roof to give them the stability they so desired.

“Good luck to you. Give them the support they need so they can stand tall.”

He chuckled to himself.

“I guess it’s just like people, you can stand by yourself and try to appear strong, but ultimately you need others to keep you standing.”

Was that too deep? He was thinking of Ingong as he stared at the cards, so maybe that’s why.

If it was really something like glue or tape wouldn’t there be a lot of problems in using this as a de-stressing solution? Wait, wait, Kyouhei was at least a little sure he’d seen a video on how to do it, somewhere…. Argh.

“That’d suck for us, then. I don’t think I have glue or tape on me and I don’t see the point of going to get some if I’m just going to have to use these cards later.” He pulled a random index card up and read the formula written there with a blank face.

“That is… hm… Dongmin, do you normally say things like that or have you just not slept in a while?” Kyouhei was in college for physical science, not philosophy or psychology.

theshadowjjang:

He finally managed to get a triangle up and he just leaned back into his seat, just basking in his moment of glory. Success has never felt this good before. The thought that he had many more triangles to make was a fact he pushed out into the corner of his mind for now. He just wanted to feel victorious for a short while longer. “Yeah, it is pretty difficult, I just now managed my first one.”

Sitting up straight once more while letting out a sigh, he didn’t realize that his exhale of air was enough to disrupt his triangle and it toppled over. Throwing his head back, he groaned quietly. “Back to zero.” How long was it going to take to finish off the one this time?

With Kyouhei asking for a ‘solid’, Dongmin looked over quizzically, wondering what it was that he wanted help with. “What’s up? What do you need?” He was ready to help out if it meant he could hold off on trying to make a triangle again. He simply wasn’t ready to have to go through the pain of needing to watch him fail repeatedly over these triangles.

“Do you need me to hold onto your triangles or something?” He asked, now noticing that Kyouhei was holding onto the card that was placed on top of the two triangles he’d made.

“When I see pictures or videos it always looks super easy… but I guess that’s just movie magic.” His conclusion was so mismatched (nonsensical words and an almost comedically stern tone of voice) that Kyouhei actually giggled a little.

The brunet nodded for two beats and shuffled over a little so that Dongmin wouldn’t have to contort in order to reach the two triangles he’d somehow kept up this time.

“Please do! I feel like they’ll stay up as soon as I get the… the roof on them, but they need a little support before I leave them on their own.” Yikes, that sounded a bit too deep for something so simple.

“In other words, give them the spine they deserve.”

theshadowjjang:

Dongmin wasn’t too good at this either, but he did have the patience for it, so he was sure that as long as they both remained calm and worked hard at it, they would be able to get this to work for them.  With the base being as long as it was, he wondered if they would even have enough cards to even finish off their card castle or not. “I think what we have now should be good. Any longer, we may not have enough cards to finish.”

image

Just a guess on his part, really. With Kyouhei already starting to try to make his triangles, Dongmin on the other half of the castle was trying to do the very same. Absolute quiet descended down on the two of them as they both were keeping quiet to focus with everything they had to make their triangles. Carefully he was trying to make it so that the very tips of the cards would touch at the top, and to have the cards be spaced evenly apart from the center.

Almost there… he could do this. How about—nope. Okay. Let’s try this again. Maybe if he tries to put the bottom of the cards in between two base cards?

“That’s true.” As many cards as Kyouhei had made, there was no telling how many they’d actually need. He rested his elbows on the table, right next to his own stack of cards, and began to set cards up.

“Ah.” On his second set, it collapsed and took out the one he’d managed to stay up. “Harder than it looks.”

Not that the student was surprised, but sometimes images made it look so easy. Or maybe he was thinking of plastic cup towers, which were, of course, way easier to make.

With a little difficulty, Kyouhei managed to get two triangles up and began to set a card down on top of them, carefully. He felt like if he let go, he’d ruin everything.

“Hey, Dongmin, can you do me a solid?”

theshadowjjang:

Everyone has their moments and that’s okay. As long as you didn’t hurt anyone (or yourself) it was fine. It was shocking to see him throw up all the notecards, but he could certainly understand the notion. Sometimes he just wanted to give up as well and just stare up at the sky absentmindedly.

“Yeah, let’s see how well this will work out for us.” He followed Kyohei’s actions curiously, moving some chairs on his end of the table and set them aside. He accepted the one pile of the cards and he stared down at them, wondering how well this was going to go.

“Guess we can start with setting up the base?” He was guessing that laying down some cards to use as a base would serve them well so they wouldn’t have to worry about the cards sliding around on the table. Though they would have to worry about the cards that were laid down on the base would end up sliding. “Then we can work on setting up the triangles of the castle.” That is how it works, isn’t it?

Kyouhei wasn’t too good at this on his own, but once he’d managed to make a base for his pile and it was easier from there. Still, only time would tell of their success or failure.

image

“How far across should we make it?” He had roughly fifty cards altogether, which meant Dongmin and he each had about twenty-five, even if he hadn’t counted them all individually, and that meant that if they wanted they could make a pretty big tower….

“Uhm, yeah, probably.” The table would be too slippery otherwise. He began to set a few down, then took two in his hands and made a test triangle, quickly becoming tense with concentration.

theshadowjjang:

A small laugh leaves Dongmin and he shakes his head. “No problem. I figured you needed someone to bring you back.” He joked. He had seen Kyohei suffering but wasn’t sure when or how to call out to him until the young male threw up his cards in likely desperation?

image

“Hm… you ask a good question. Could we?” He thought about it, tilting his head to the side. The quality of the cards determined how easy or hard of a time you would have to stack all of the cards to make a castle. “Though the only way to know the answer to that is to try it out, right?” He smiled, finding the idea to be pretty amusing.

Leave it to him to just nonchalantly further the notion of moving away from one’s studies. He was more interested in having some fun, really. He handed Kyouhei some of the cards that he’d picked up. “Should we start then?”

Kyouhei can’t help but flush slightly in the face of the undeniable facts - he’d kinda lost it in the face of study-pressure. Not that it was a large breakdown, but still! He needed to pay more attention to his surroundings.

“I guess so…” After all, if it could be done with paper cups, surely index cards couldn’t be that far off. They weighed about the same, probably. The biochemist accepted more cards and brought them over to a table, head tilted slightly in contemplation.

A smile flickered onto his lips as he moved a few chairs away from an empty table with his feet and plopped down without looking. He divided all the cards into two piles and held one up to Dongmin. “Ready to get this show on the road?”

Dongmin only chuckled in response, finding the reaction to be pretty humorous. It reminded him of his friend ‘Ju Ingong’ whose name translated would mean ‘main character’. Funny, right? “My name is Dongmin, what’s your name?” He asked as he got out of the chair that he was currently sitting at to start picking up some of the cards.

He was a bit curious as to what it was that he was studying that made him just rage quit and throw up his cards in the air in defeat. “With this many cards, you could probably make a card castle.” The final resort to anyone bored enough or absolutely through with studying. Turn your study materials into play things.

“Kyouhei. Thank you for bringing me back into reality, Dongmin.” Mid-introductions, the brunet joined the boy who called him out on his act of brief insanity and began to collect the index cards in one hand.

image

He perked up a bit at the idea of stacking cards - it would be easier with an actual deck of playing cards but with some patience and determination, it could probably be done?

“Do you think we could…? There are plenty of empty, flat surfaces around for it, I guess.” And it wasn’t like his mind would allow him to do anything else now that it was done with theory. Experimentally, he bent a card between two fingers.
